Music Week: Hip Hop Obsession in Japan

Today, I was so ready to insert  a Throwback Thursday musical tribute.  But out popped this video…oh this video.  I’ll let you watch then give my opinion.


Black Lifestyle!!!

Initially, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.  Then, I didn’t know what to feel.  Should I be flattered?  Should I stage an intervention for the B-Gyaru girls (j/k)?  Is this stereotype insulting?  Finally, I had to say, “whatever makes you happy…”  They’re following a trend, as many of us do and some of them wear it well.  I don’t find it insulting.  Hip Hop/R&B are widely known genres of music and in some countries, stand as the only perception its inhabitants have of Black culture.  Apart from that, one short video is never enough to formulate an educated opinion on any subject.  I would love to hear from anyone that has more first-hand knowledge of the ‘Black/B-Gyaru Lifestyle’.  Please comment if you do!  Thanks 🙂

Music on my mind all the time.  When I hear my favorite song, it’s like a gold mine.  Hahaha!  I might need to copyright those lines.  That was my lyrical attempt during this week of rhyming, melody, and sweet sounds.  Emeli Sandé does it a little better than me.  My li-le (little) Brit has been an obsession for about a year.  Her first single, Heaven, debuted in August of 2011 and her album, Our Version of Events, subsequently rose to number one in the UK.  Sandé continues to gain positive responses from other musicians and music-lovers all over.  She officially won me over when I heard her cover of Coldplay’s Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall.  Please listen if you haven’t already and fall in love!

Lipstick Movement: Tory Burch


     Born and raised in the greater Philadelphia area, Tory Burch is not only a trendsetter, but a mother, philanthropist and great entrepreneur.  Despite not having formal training in fashion, she launched a now widely successful apparel and accessories line in 2004.  As of this past January, Burch’s company grew to 83 stores nationwide! Department stores including, but certainly not limited to, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman caught onto her classic style and became key distributors.

     It’s safe to say you’re a trailblazer when you are endorsed on The Oprah Winfrey Show, as Tory Burch was in April 2005, just one year after introducing her brand to the world.  To date, she has also received numerous fashion awards, including the 2007 Brand Launch Award and the 2008 CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year Award.  Financially, she seems to be doing pretty well too.  Forbes estimates that she is now a billionaire.


     Burch is equally committed to fashion as she is to helping others achieve their goals.  In 2008, she partnered with ACCION USA, an organization that helps low-income entrepreneurs, and launched The Tory Burch Foundation, providing economic opportunities for women and their families.  Oh and let’s not forget she is the mother of three sons. Whew!
All in all, Tory Burch is doing her thing!  Lipstick love from us to you!!

        In an industry that tends to follow set trends, Salaam Coleman Smith, President of Style Network, is establishing her own media paradigm.  Responsible for rebranding the network, she has created a station that embraces diversity, real women and an unquenchable thirst for all facets of style.  Within six years of her as chief, Style Network reached its highest viewership and is now a global brand, having channels in Australia and the UK.

        Although Coleman Smith studied engineering, she only spent one year in that field, then jetted to chase her passion in entertainment.  Determination will forever be key in one’s pursuit of fulfillment.  I respect all professionals that take a leap of faith and discover their personal legend.  Along the way, she has also worked with various charities and and non-profit organizations.  She’s a global woman doing it all and doing in style.  Work!
